New Davis Cup captain defends Tennis NZ decision

| Latest Tennis News | Tuesday January 29 2013 8:50

New Davis Cup captain Alistair Hunt is defending the decision to pick part time pro Matt Simpson in the squad for this week's tie against Lebanon at Albany.

Simpson has a ranking of 1566 in singles and spent much of last year playing club tennis in Germany.

Former Davis Cup player Adam Thompson says the selection is a disgrace.

Simpson is the son of former captain Jeff Simpson who is on the selector's board.

But Hunt says they went through a transparent process.

He says once Matt's name came into the mix then Jeff had to withdraw as a conflict of interest, so he had nothing to do with it.

But Hunt says Simpson has previous Davis Cup experience.

He says he would have liked to have 17-year-old Cameron Norrie in the team but they have opted for Simpson's experience.
