Tanner misses out on Olympics

By: Andy Rowe | Other Sport News | Thursday April 19 2012 7:26

Debbie Tanner has missed out on the Olympic triathlon team by just 24 seconds.

That's how far Tanner was behind fellow Kiwi Nicky Samuels at the ITU World Series opener in Sydney.

National coach Greg Fraine says that result gave Samuels the third spot on the New Zealand team.

"If anyone ... when they hear the news that Debbie was told, she was disappointed."

Fraine says the result made it clear who they should select for the third spot on the team.

"It was quite easy, it was the race in Sydney in the weekend, Nicky put her hand up and went very close to that automatic selection."

The ITU is expected to ratify New Zealand's three spots in both the men's and women's teams in May.
