By: Brenton Vannisselroy | Other Sport News | Monday July 30 2012 7:02

New Zealand paddler Mike Dawson has impressively advanced to the semifinals of the menâ s K1 on the first day of the Olympic canoe slalom competition.

Dawson has set the eighth quickest time of the 22 competitors to secure a place in the 15 man semifinal lineup.

His first run was fast but he incurred four penalty seconds for clipping two gates.

Dawson was then flawless in his second run, completing the course in 88.58 seconds, more than two seconds faster.

He'll now have a couple of days to prepare for the semifinals on Wednesday night.
