TAB wants explanation over controversial SBW bout

By: Guy Heveldt | Other Sport News | Saturday February 9 2013 8:54

The TAB is furious over the controversial nature of Sonny Bill Williams' boxing win over Francois Botha in Brisbane.

Williams has won the fight by a unanimous points decision, however the fight was inexplicably stopped after 10 rounds despite being advertised as a full, WBA 12-round title fight.

Botha's camp has immediately called for a rematch after the way it ended.

TAB head bookmaker Mark Stafford says it's very poor and they want an explanation because they were told it was 12 rounds.

"Absolutely it was. In fact we went to great pains to double check and triple check that it was 12 rounds because (in) a Sonny Bill fight this has happened before so we're pretty annoyed about it."

Stafford says it's bizarre timing after the Australian Crime Commission's report into doping and match fixing in sport.

"God their timing couldn't have been worse could it, with all the news that's coming out of Australia the last few days but I'm a boxing fan, point number one and I'm a Sonny Bill Williams fan as well and I just hate what this has done for boxing and for Sonny Bill.

"We'll be having a strong meeting and I'm going to be very vocal on Monday when we get the heads around the table and I'll be saying let's not do round betting on Sonny Bill Williams fights in the future because it just leaves a bad taste in everybody's mouth."

There's been no official explanation for the shortened fight.
