Suspended Lions coach John Mitchell may have given the franchise a tailor-made excuse to sack him as coach.
Mitchell's been stood down as coach following a player revolt, said to be directed at his use of physical humiliation as a punishment.
South African journalist Andy Capistagno says with the Lions not likely to be in Super Rugby next year, it could be a ploy to free up cash.
Capistagno says it may be a convenient way to get rid of Mitchell and bring in a local coach on a far lower wage.
The bottom-placed South African side, which is already assured to be the Lions, is set to be dropped from next year's tournament, to be replaced by the new Southern Kings outfit.
