The Northern Mystics plan to get one over their 2011 grand final conquerors has failed to materialise, crashing to a 56-43 loss to the Queensland Firebirds on the Gold Coast. The sides were level at 14-all after the first quarter, before the home side went on a 18-7 run in the period leading up to halftime. Mystics coach Debbie Fuller says it was a defining quarter. "They had a couple of personnel changes as we did, they brought Elissa Macleod into centre who really just drove through that mid court and controlled their attacking end with Lauren Nourse, that was hard to stop." Fuller says they were overwhelmed. "We couldn't handle being fully congested for the ball, we needed to get free earlier on attack, and on our defence Medhurst got her eye on the circle and the ball was just fired into Aiken."
