Laird believes short game's important

By: Andy Rowe | Latest Golf News | Friday May 11 2012 16:06

Round one leader Martin Laird believes his short game will become more and more important in the next three rounds of the Players Championship.

The Scot shares the lead with Englishman Ian Poulter on seven under par, one shot clear of American Blake Adams.

Laird say Sawgrass rewards a solid short game.

"Key to my run today was the putter, putted really well. Had a few par saves that I made but chipped the ball really well too, which is also important around here because these greens are so small, the wind picks up a little bit you're going to miss some greens."

Blake Adams is alone in third at six under par, a shot clear of fellow countrymen Kevin Na and Ben Crane.
