Brendon McCullum believes he is the first in what will be a group of players rested from the Black Caps over the next six months.
McCullum will miss the limited over part of the West Indies tour, in a well signposted move to give some players a break from a huge upcoming workload.
"Got to park up, make sure I work hard, when I do get back over to the West Indies make sure I'm ready to go," McCullum says.
He says the schedule over the next 12 months makes it nearly impossible to play every match of every tour in all forms of cricket, and if he was to play every game, he'd be home for three weeks in the next year.
McCullum says with family commitments to consider as well, something would have to give at some stage.
He says over his career he's never wanted to sit out tours, but he's starting to understand he can still work hard while not part of the team.
