Southee confident thumb injury is behind him

Tim Southee believes he's ready to return to international cricket.

The Northern Districts swing bowler has been called into the Black Caps' one-day squad to replace Mitchell McClenaghan, who's been sidelined with a side strain.

Southee has been out of action for a couple of months with a thumb injury but says he came through Northern's Plunket Shield match against Wellington without any issues.

"There's no problems batting, bowling or fielding so very pleased with the way that's gone, saw the surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he was very happy with the way that things had progressed and the recovery period had gone pretty well."

Otago opener Hamish Rutherford has also been elevated to the squad ahead of Wednesday's second one-dayer against England in Napier.
