Pirates keep top spot hopes alive

By: Brenton Vannisselroy | Latest Basketball News | Saturday May 19 2012 6:28

The Auckland Pirates remain in contention for top spot on the National Basketball League ladder after edging the Saints 94-91 in their penultimate regular season game in Wellington.

The Pirates are now level with the Bay Hawks at the top of the table ahead of this weekend's final games.

The result also means the Saints will finish the regular season in fourth, behind the Manawatu Jets, who've thrashed the Taranaki Mountain Airs 104-77 in Palmerston North.

The Southland Sharks have won the battle of the cellar dwellers, beating the Harbour Heat 96-81 in Invercargill.

The Heat will finish the season with the wooden spoon.
