Basketball New Zealand is defending its decision to send the Tall Blacks on mission impossible to qualify for the Olympics. A severely under strength New Zealand side failed to make it out of their group at the qualifying tournament in Venezuela. Acting CEO Murray Strong says despite the unlikelihood of the Tall Blacks qualifying for London, the cost of sending the team was worth it. "If I take the long term view of it, absolutely it was. We needed to get those guys exposed to that international competition, we also needed to make sure the programmes Nenad (Vucinic) had been putting in place were seen to be working, and we saw that with the result against Angola." Murray Strong says it's important that the Tall Blacks get more international games than what they currently do. Photo: Getty Images |
