Political support for building safety clause

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Wellington News | Saturday June 2 2012 10:31

Peter Dunne is throwing his support behind moves to allow people to refuse to work in an earthquake-prone building.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union will vote next month on whether to add a clause to contracts requiring employers prove buildings are safe and carry out strengthening work if they're not.

MP Peter Dunne says we won't get change until people put their foot down.

"People are refusing to work in buildings that they feel are unsafe or that they don't like going into them and I think at the end of the day that will be the incentive that will force people to either demolish the buildings concerned or to strengthen them."
