Description of suspected sexual predator released

By: Shani Annand-Baron | Latest Wellington News | Friday June 1 2012 12:23

Police have a clear idea in their mind of what a suspected sexual predator operating in Wellington looks like.

Over the past fortnight there have been four reported indecent assaults in the Capital.

The first two - one in Seatoun and one in Mt Cook - involved women being dragged down the road and then sexually assaulted.

The third and fourth incidents, the latest which occurred only yesterday, occurred in Melrose and Kilbirnie and are believed to be linked.

Detective Inspector Paul Basham says they have a clear description of the Maori or Polynesian offender who exposed himself to the woman involved in the two latest incidents.

"In his late teens, early twenties, with a short to medium height. He's loosely described in one incident as looking 'chubby' and in the other as of medium build but potentially with a round baby face."

Detective Inspector Basham says at this stage they don't believe all four attacks are linked.

He says as they continue to look for the offender, or offenders, the message remains the same.

"We urge people to be alert to their own personal surroundings and security, particularly for young women on their own and if in doubt, if they have a mobile phone, don't hesitate to dial 111 and let us know."
