Spike in cryptosporidium cases in Wellington

By: Nita Blake-Persen | Latest Wellington News | Friday July 27 2012 13:15

A spike in cryptosporidium cases throughout Wellington has authorities urging people to stay away from swimming pools if they've been sick.

Regional public health say there's been high numbers of the illness reported throughout the region, with many cases having had contact with the Wellington Regional Aquatic centre in Kilbirnie and the Arena Aquatic centre in Porirua.

Medical officer of health Jill McKenzie is urging people not to swim too soon after being sick with diarrhoea as it's is a risk for passing infection onto other pool users.

She says pools in the region have been alerted to the increased number of cases but while modern treatment systems can remove the bug, people may be affected before it's removed by filters.
