University's majority support smokefree status

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Wellington News | Friday August 24 2012 14:26

Nearly three quarters of Victoria University students appear to support their campus becoming smokefree.

The University's Students Association have carried out consultation ahead on the university's proposal to make the campus smokefree by next year.

If the proposal goes ahead, Student Association Vice President Rory McCourt has hinted that the the association won't necessarily support the move to ban smoking.

"If the consultation does say that students and staff back going smokefree. We're still going to express the concerns of our members either way and that's what the feedback so far has told us, that yes there is a small group of concerned and they're absolutely legitimate."

The smokefree proposal would affect all four campuses - Kelburn, Karori, Pipitea and Te Aro.
