Wellington police are trying to identify a man struck and killed by a commuter train near the Hutt River rail bridge around 8pm yesterday.

They're asking for public help.

He was approximately 175 centimetres, or five foot 10 tall, of solid build with dreadlocks.

The death is being referred to the Coroner's Office.
