Quake strengthening needs 'rational approach'

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Wellington News | Tuesday July 17 2012 11:24

Wellington's City Council's calling for a 'rational approach' to the issue of earthquake strengthening.

The council recently signed off over $50 million for strengthening buildings in the city over the next ten years.

Councillor Iona Pannett says meetings for building owners in the CBD have been well attended.

She says there's obviously a thirst for information among property owners, but says there's no need for Wellingtonians to panic just because of the situation in Christchurch.

"We do need to take an intelligent and rational approach to the risk of a major earthquake, if the risk has not increased we know that there is a possibility but it's still a low probability compared to some other kinds of risks that people face."

Ms Pannett's planning more meetings about building strengthening after the Royal Commission wraps up in Christchurch.
