Porirua City Council will be culling the number of local councillors in its next election. The council has announced it will be reducing the number of councillors from 13 to 10, saying they have systems in place to allow for the change. Porirua mayor Nick Leggett says the Local Government Commission has given the change the green light, supporting the council's belief that reducing the number of councillors will still enable effective representation. Mr Leggett says the council have systems in place to to allow for the reduction.
"We do enough in terms of community connections through our village planning processes and the councillors are well connected to their communities here and represent the diversity that exists in Porirua."
He says it will be up to voters to decide which councillors get the chop. |
