Wearable Arts extension set to boost Wgtn

Wellington's economy looks likely to get a multi-million dollar boost thanks to many more years of Wearable Arts awards.

The Wellington city council has announced the WOW awards will be in the capital for another nine years after renewing their contract with the shows organisers.

Positively Wellington tourism general manager Sarah Miekle says the awards bring a significant amount of cash to the city.

"In 2009 WOW was worth about $15 million into the city with about $5 million of that going to the city's retailers alone and since then the city has seen a 20 percent increase in visitors to the city for WOW."

Ms Miekle says the awards bring a great sense of vibrancy to the capital, as well as all the economic benefits.
