Light rail could be answer to Wellington traffic woes

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Wellington News | Wednesday August 15 2012 12:16

A multi-million dollar light rail network is being considered as the answer to Wellington's traffic woes.

Light rail is one of three shortlisted options to be considered by the Regional Council's transport committee.

The other two options include giving more priority to buses and creating exclusive bus corridors through the city.

At an estimated $280 million, the light rail option is the most expensive, but Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown is pleased to see it's being considered.

"I'm not surprised but I'm very pleased that it's still there. I think it offers a step change, but it may need to be preceded by more bus priority."

Ms Wade-Brown says the costs must now be weighed up before a final decision is made in March next year.
