Nelson and Tasman voters reject councils merge

By: Tim Dower | Upper South Island News | Sunday April 22 2012 6:22

It's a case of where to now in the Nelson and Tasman districts, where voters have rejected plans to amalgamate their local bodies.

Tasman District Mayor Richard Kempthorne is relieved at the decision.

Initial figures from his district show more than 70 percent of people who voted didn't want the councils to merge.

In Nelson the poll went the other way with 56 percent of people in favour.

Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio is expected to put forward new proposals aimed at bringing the councils together.
