Missing skier found dead on Mount Ruapehu

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Upper North Island News | Monday October 15 2012 4:56

A European skier has been found dead on Mount Ruapehu.

The 25-year-old was reported missing from National Park on Saturday afternoon.

Searches for him were made difficult due to unsettled weather and treacherous terrain.

He was located by the Taupo Rescue Helicopter and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue organisation, at the bottom of a rocky area known as the Pinnacles, late yesterday afternoon.

Police say the man was last seen on Thursday - it looks like he strayed into an area of steep slopes and rocks.

A post mortem examination will be done at Taurmaranui.

His name won't be released until his family's been told.
