Murupara's gearing up to host John Key, the first ever visit to the Bay of Plenty town by a Prime Minister. He'll talk with locals about the hardship many are experiencing, brought on by the loss of traditional employment, rural isolation and lack of access to public services. One resident is Pem Bird, who's also Maori Party President. He says locals are looking forward to welcoming Mr Key. "Very excited about it and again wondering why would the Prime Minister want to come to a place like Murupara. Prime Minister's don't come to places like Murupara, so there's a keen sense of anticipation in the town." Mr Bird says they'll be wanting to put across a range of talking points. Photo: NZ Herald |
