People in central and northern parts of the North Island are being warned to batten down the hatches with thunderstorms, strong winds and maybe small tornados on the way.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued between Dargaville and Taranaki.
MetService says a very active cold front is expected to move across those areas this morning, bringing showers and squally thunderstorms.
Forecaster Gerard Barrow says there's a risk of small tornados, especially in coastal areas.
"Where there could be gusts of 110km per hour that has the potential to cause destruction or damage." Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees, power lines and may make driving hazardous. Photo: NZ Herald |
