Unauthorised vessels approaching Rena wreck

By: Sam Thompson | Upper North Island News | Friday August 10 2012 14:24

There's concern unauthorised vessels are continuing to approach the wreck of the Rena, despite the two-nautical mile exclusion zone.

Braemar Howells Operations Manager Neil Lloyd says they've had to patrol the wreck site in stormy weather conditions.

Salvors have finally managed to resume recovery work on the Rena after an extended period of bad weather.

They are doing preparatory work on the bow before sections can be be removed.

Mr Lloyd says plastic beads washing onto the shoreline from the wreck are continuing to be a problem in the Coromandel and as far down as Waihi Beach.

He says a hundred bags of beads and flotsam have been recovered so far.
