Police officer's son handed 'merciful' sentence

| Upper North Island News | Thursday July 19 2012 13:47

A Rotorua Judge has this morning handed down a 'merciful' sentence to a teenager who abducted and assaulted his ex-girlfriend.

Ryan Bielby, the son of one of Tauranga's top cops, has been sentenced to community detention, community work and intensive supervision.

On Valentines Day, Bielby went to Papamoa drop a bag off to the victim, they drove for about an hour, but when she wanted out, he restrained her and took off towards the Kaimai ranges.

The abduction sparked a two hour police chase, which saw Bielby reach speeds of nearly 180 km/h, the chase ended after Bielby crashed through a paddock near Turangi.

Judge Philip Cooper gave a starting point of two and a half years in prison, but reduced the sentence because of Bielby's youth, employment prospects and his early guilty plea.
