Kiwirail plans to mothball Gisborne to Napier line

By: Newstalk ZB Staff | Upper North Island News | Sunday September 2 2012 15:48

Despite reports KiwiRail is planning to mothball the Gisborne to Napier rail line, the Transport Minister has not yet formally announced its closure.

A KiwiRail statement on its website says the line, which has been closed since March, is not commercially viable to operate in the future.

It says the infrastructure costs to maintain the line would far exceed the potential revenue gained from local freight businesses.

But it says mothballing does not mean closure and while rail operations would cease, infrastructure will be kept in place and minimal maintenance carried out.

Gisborne's Mayor Meng Foon says Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee has not contacted him about the decision and he's still waiting for a definitive answer.
