Economist shocked at 'holiday highway' plans

| Upper North Island News | Friday August 31 2012 8:09

An economist thinks the 'holiday highway' north of Auckland should be scrapped.

The Puhoi to Wellsford Road is set to cost $1.76 million.

The benefit to cost ratio for the Puhoi to Warkworth part is estimated to be 1.5 - the Warkworth to Wellsford section is thought to be one.

Auckland University associate Professor Rhema Vaithianathan is shocked by the amount of money being bandied about.

"Someone, somewhere has decided that this is a good thing to do and has developed an economic case around it, and as an economist I'm quite concerned and a bit offended."

Ms Vaithianathan says there's a lot of misunderstanding about how much the highway is worth.
