Flooding closes roads near Gisborne

By: Sophie Lowery | Upper North Island News | Tuesday July 24 2012 14:52

Some roads north of Gisborne are closed due to surface flooding.

The heaviest rainfalls have been recorded along the coastal strip from Te Puia to Whangara, with rainfall totals of up to 150 millimetres.

State Highways in the region remain open, but surface flooding has closed Waiomatatini Road in Ruatoria, and Tauwhareparae Road, as well as the road down to Waipiro Bay at Mahanga Road at Mahia.

The Hikuwai River at Tolaga Bay is expected to peak around 10 metres, but Civil Defence says evacuations aren't required.
