Long running Treaty claim reaches agreement

By: Natasha Burling | Upper North Island News | Thursday August 30 2012 10:54

A big step today for the longest running Treaty of Waitangi claim.

Wanganui iwi have been trying to have grievances addressed by the Crown and the Courts since 1873.

Wanganui District Council Mayor Annette Main says representatives from the council, Ruapehu and Stratford District Councils and Horizons Regional Council will be in Wellington today for the signing of a high level agreement between the Crown and Wanganui iwi.

"Which recognises the agreed principles that they're basing the settlement of that claim on."

Ms Main says the signing of the agreement is very positive and it will mean the Whanganui River will be well looked after.
