Boats sink in Fiordland

By: Anna Cross | Lower South Island News | Friday September 7 2012 14:18

Salvors are on the way to Fiordland after the sinking of two vessels.

The recreational boats Karaka and Michelle were rafted up together and have both sunk at their mooring at Beach Harbour in Breaksea Sound.

Environment Southland on-scene commander, Dallas Bradley, says there's a small oil slick at Beach Harbour.

He says it's understood there's very little diesel aboard either boat.

"The owners are putting together a salvage plan. They've got divers from the North Island coming down to assist with that salvage and they are going to try and get in there today."

But Dallas Bradley says flying in may prove difficult as a result of extremely windy conditions.
