Southern DHB doctors defend colleague

By: Kaye Albyt | Lower South Island News | Thursday September 6 2012 16:02

Doctors want the Southern DHB to withdraw a warning it's slapped on an outspoken colleague.

Dr John Chambers is in trouble for criticising the withdrawal of proposed funding for extra emergency specialist at Dunedin Hospital.

But John Bonning from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine says Dr Chambers wasn't speaking as a hospital employee, and the warning amounts to intimidation.

"The threat of discipline should be removed, John (Chambers) has given enormous service to Dunedin Hospital for many, many years. He was advocating for the patients in his department."

Mr Bonning's concerned that such a well-respected senior doctor is being targeted.

"I think it's a significant over-reaction and intimidation by this DHB on one of its most valued commissioned workers."
