Excitement building for Willis' 1500m final

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Lower North Island News | Wednesday August 8 2012 7:49

Lower Hutt locals are buzzing with excitement this morning as home town hero Nick Willis prepares to race in his Olympic final.

The 1500 metre runner will have his shot at a medal when he races at 8:15am.

Lower Hutt mayor Ray Wallace says the whole community is incredibly proud of Willis, regardless of today's outcome.

One who knows only too well what he'll be feeling is Sir Peter Snell.

He likes Willis' form and believes he's the smartest guy in what will be a tactical race.

Sir Peter says if Willis wins gold, he will become the best New Zealand 1500m winner of all time.

Sir Peter says he would defer to him and he's sure Sir John Walker would too.
