A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the upper North Island, from Taranaki, Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty north.
It includes the Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island, Waikato, Northland and Auckland.
MetService says severe thunderstorms, wind gusts of up to 130 kilometres an hour and isolated tornadoes are all possible, mainly in coastal areas. And a series of waterspouts has been reported off the coast of Taranaki. Locals say they've seen several out at sea this morning,
And the predicted lightning and thunder has crashed into Taranaki.
