Gisborne mayor sure of Kiwirail's future

By: Sophie Lowery | Lower North Island News | Saturday April 14 2012 8:55

Gisborne's Mayor is confident KiwiRail will see a future for the damaged railway line between Napier and Gisborne.

An assessment of the line has found it needs up to $4.3 million dollars worth of repairs, which will take five months to complete.

But it says more work needs to be done to determine the economic viability of the route.

Mayor Meng Foon says there's strong support in his city for fixing the link.

"We're fortunate that we've had some major activity in terms of freight transport on the rail during Christmas and the harvest season. That was a good start, and projections are actually pretty good."

Mr Foon will lead a march through the city tomorrow, to highlight the importance of saving the railway.
