Trees destroyed on family orchard

By: Sophie Lowery | Lower North Island News | Tuesday April 10 2012 15:43

Around 1500 apple trees on a family-owned orchard in Hawke's Bay have been purposely destroyed.

Entire rows of trees that are around two years old were cut in half at Moffett Orchards in Fernhill on Saturday night.

Family member Jonty Moffet says he's at a loss to explain why someone could have destroyed the trees.

He says it would've taken one person five hours to cut them all, and the damage will cost the family around $100,000.

It's the second time the orchard has been targeted. A woman was sent to jail after she stole over $150,000 of fruit and vegetables over an 18 month period.
