Equine service planned for Hamilton Airport

By: Annabel Reid | Latest Hamilton News | Monday March 26 2012 9:04

Hamilton Airport is planning an equine service.

It's proposing a hub for horse trainers and breeders to fly with their horses directly into the Waikato.

Business correspondent Roger Kerr says at the moment, any horses travelling out of New Zealand have to be taken to Auckland Airport.

"A direct Hamilton arrangement would cut the trip for the horses from currently eight and a half hours down to about three or four hours. Of course the horses arrive in better condition."

Mr Kerr says it's welcome news for breeders and trainers.

"The Hamilton airport sees itself as a major airfreight hub horse trainers and breeders in the Waikato they want to cut down the travel time for horses into Australia by flying direct out of Hamilton rather than filling up the motorway to Auckland."

Mr Kerr says there will have stables and vet services at the airport, too.
