Mind boggling figures from Christchurch

By: Lesley Deverall | Latest Christchurch News | Thursday May 17 2012 12:56

Some mind-boggling figures from Christchurch.

By June the Government will have spent $2.25 billion of its $5.5 billion Earthquake Recovery Fund.

The figures were unveiled in Christchurch today by the Prime Minister and his Quake Recovery Minister.

Gerry Brownlee says up to $40 million of work is being completed every month.

Prime Minister John Key says more money from the fund will be spent over the coming year.

"We are forecast to spend another $2.17 billion in the coming financial year from the Governments Canterbury earthquake recovery fund as we ramp up the repair and replacement of damaged horizontal infrastructure."

There are between 120 and 150 work sites underway throughout the city at any one time employing 2500 people.

Already 12,000 square metres of road has been repaired, and 12.6 kilometres of waste-water pipe and 9.5 kilometres of drinking-water pipe have been installed.
