German jailed for smuggling geckos

By: Anna Cross | Latest Christchurch News | Friday May 4 2012 13:58

A German visitor has been jailed for smuggling endangered geckos.

Andreas Hahn was sentenced to four months in jail at the Christchurch District Court today.

It comes after he admitted taking four endangered jewelled geckos from Banks Peninsula.

The current maximum penalty under the Wildlife Act for taking protected wildlife is a fine of 100-thousand dollars, or six months in prison.

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson is currently working on a bill that would double the maximum fine, and lift the maximum jail term to three years.
