Christchurch's old AMI stadium can be fixed - insurers

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Christchurch News | Wednesday October 17 2012 11:35

The insurers of Christchurch's old AMI Stadium say it can be fixed.

Civic Assurance says its engineers have calculated the repairs will cost far less than the cost of building a replacement.

CERA had planned on building a new covered stadium close to the new CBD.

CEO Tim Sole says he's seen a report but has no idea of the exact cost of repair.

"There is no number provided, they've just said it can be repaired below the cost of the sum insured, and there's much more work to do. It's a big project, building or repairing a stadium."

The news has come as a major surprise to the Canterbury Rugby Football Union.

CEO Hamish Riach says there's still a lot to work out.

"We're completely in the dark, about the report. We don't know the state of the old AMI Stadium, we haven't seen or heard anything specific about the state of the park and whether it's repairable or not."
