Takamore case going before Supreme Court

| Latest Christchurch News | Tuesday July 17 2012 6:54

It's thought the Supreme Court will rule in favour of the widow of Christchurch father and Tuhoe man James Takamore.

Mr Takamore died in Christchurch in 2007 and his widow, Denise Clarke, has been battling to get his body returned, after his wider whanau took him for burial in the Bay of Plenty.

The case is going to the Supreme Court today.

Professor of Indigenous Studies at AUT University, Rawiri Taonui expects the Supreme Court will uphold the position of previous courts.

"If the Supreme Court agrees with previous decisions to return Mr Takamore to his family in Christchurch, I believe that will be the best outcome."

Mr Taonui says given the tension between customary Maori and European law, it's no wonder it's taken so long to get this far.
