Earthquake recovery strategy released

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Christchurch News | Friday June 1 2012 6:15

The Earthquake Recovery Strategy for Christchurch is being described as sharing a vision of a new city - better than Christchurch has ever seen.

The 50 page document was launched yesterday after months of consultation with community groups and key stakeholders. It sets out the way forward for the rebuilding the province.

CERA head Roger Sutton says the strategy is an essential part of the rebuild.

"How all the different plans will integrate transport with the environment, with where houses are going to go and so on, this is a document that sees all those plans coming together."

Mr Sutton says government, local councils, businesses and community groups all had an input in the document.

But there's criticism this morning that the strategy doesn't do enough to answer real questions.

Christchurch East Labour MP Lianne Dalziel says it doesn't give any concrete solutions to anything.

"There's a lot of unanswered questions in the community and a complete failure on CERA's part and the Government's part to properly engage with the community."

Ms Dalziel says most people are waiting for more direct decisions such as zonings and insurance.

It's hoped the will help groups who want to invest in the city.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says many groups outside of Christchurch have shown a keen interest to invest, but have been confused as to how they can.

"There is a need to have a basis for packaging up investment opportunities so people can simply say 'alright, I'll take that one', and I think the document will help people do that."
