Chch police calling for Navy assistance

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Christchurch News | Wednesday May 23 2012 13:50

Christchurch police are calling on the Navy to help in their search for a missing helicopter and its pilot.

The aircraft is believed to be in deep water in Lake Sumner, in North Canterbury and cannot be reached by dive teams.

Search teams have been temporarily stood down, until further assistance is available

Canterbury Police Operations Manager, Inspector Craig McKay says they are reasonably confident about the approximate location of the helicopter, which is up to 125 m deep.

He says a possible option is using a small submarine to move the helicopter into shallower water.
