Search for missing pilot reveals 'item of interest'

By: Lesley Deverall | Latest Christchurch News | Monday June 11 2012 14:25

Police searching for missing helicopter pilot Michael Mehrtens have found what they describe as an item of interest.

The Police dive squad has been searching Lake Sumner using a sonar device.

Canterbury Police Operations Manager, Inspector Craig McKay, says, at this stage they can't say whether it is the body of Mr Mehrtens,

They're currently using a remote-operated vehicle with a manipulator arm to try to retrieve the item.

The object is near where helicopter wreckage had previously been located, and is on the lake bed at a depth of 127 metres.
