Police searching for missing helicopter pilot Michael Mehrtens have found what they describe as an item of interest. The Police dive squad has been searching Lake Sumner using a sonar device. Canterbury Police Operations Manager, Inspector Craig McKay, says, at this stage they can't say whether it is the body of Mr Mehrtens, They're currently using a remote-operated vehicle with a manipulator arm to try to retrieve the item. The object is near where helicopter wreckage had previously been located, and is on the lake bed at a depth of 127 metres. Photo: NZ Herald |
