A group representing Auckland's business community has come out in favour of tolling all the city's motorways. Auckland Council's Business Advisory Panel says tolls would be the fairest way to meet the vast transport funding shortfall of almost $12 billion. Panel chairman Cameron Brewer expects people will complain they've already paid for the motorways. But he says the other options, such as another rates increase, a fuel tax, or a new airport fee, just don't cut it. "And if we spend on average $2 a day on the motorway network, a million trips a day, that's over 700 million a year." Mr Brewer says tolls would be charged at different rates for peak-time and non-peak time use. Photo: Auckland motorway (Getty Images) |
