After all the redundancies that local body amalgamation in Auckland brought - staff numbers at the council are higher this year than they were last year.
Councillor Cameron Brewer says the council's latest annual report shows staff numbers are up by 12 percent in the past 12 months.
He says it has 8,040 full time equivalent positions compared with 7,200 the previous year.
Mr Brewer says Mayor Len Brown has failed to deliver on one of the big amalgamation promises, and that was to do more with fewer staff.
The council's wage bill is now at $670 million.
More than 1,100 staff are on salaries of over $100,000 a year.
