A large part of Mt Eden Road has been blocked off for most of the day after a fire broke out just before 10am at Lahood Window Furnishing.

Fire service shift manager Jaron Phillips says the fire is now under control and firefighters are dampening down hot spots.

"We'll be in attendance for most of the afternoon and we've got a team of fire investigators that have now entered the property to start their investigation."

Fresh fire crews have now taken over and will work on ventilating the building.
