SkyCity must do better - Len Brown

By: Sam Thompson | Latest Auckland News | Saturday May 5 2012 14:44

Auckland's mayor says SkyCity's record on dealing with problem gambling is not good enough.

Latest reports show the number of people getting into trouble at SkyCity casino has tripled and Sky City's Host Responsibility programme has not been reviewed despite the casino's licence requiring that to happen every two years.

Len Brown says SkyCity must do better if it wants to win the support of Aucklanders for its convention centre project.

"My concern is that they start acting with immediacy. The pressure is very much on SkyCity, particularly in the midst of these discussions, to show that they are genuinely committed to dealing with harm minimisation in problem gambling."

Mr Brown is suggesting pre-paid cards to limit expenditure, and harm minimisation officers be stationed at the casino 24/7.
