Women's record broken at Auckland marathon

By: Laura Heathcote | Latest Auckland News | Sunday October 28 2012 14:30

A new course record is being celebrated at the closing stages of Auckland's annual marathon.

16,500 competitors have slogged it out over a variety of running events, with some 45,000 people lining the track and the finish at Victoria Park.

Christchurch woman Alexandra Williams has clocked the fastest ever women's time for the full marathon, at just over two hours and 41 minutes.

Race director Richard Lindroos is delighted.

"She had a stunning run, cleared away in the second half of the course and went on to break the course record."

Australian Rowan Walker won the men's event with a finishing time of just over two hours 24 minutes.

Mr Lindroos says about 140 people have been treated by ambulance staff, mostly for minor bumps and scrapes, and dehydration.
