Auckland Council's being urged to do more to encourage commuters to ditch their cars and take up cycling. Cycle Action Auckland has welcomed moves to install solid rubber kerbs, flexible bollards and raised lane markings at trouble spots in New Lynn and Massey. Cycle Action chair Barbara Cuthbert says most mornings, impatient motorists will use the cycle lane as a second traffic lane, blocking any bike use. She says using lane dividers around all of the region's main roads, will make a difference. "From what I'm hearing from the cyclist's it definitely will, because the major thing that prevents people from cycling in Auckland is the issue of safety. This really is a huge safety improvement." Ms Cuthbert says this will in turn get more people on two wheels. Photo: stock.xchng |
